Fundación Green Apple
COLOMBIA
Fundación Green Apple is a not-for-profit based in Cartagena and on the island of Tierra Bomba, using recycling and resource management as tools for social and environmental change. Founded in 2017, the organisation works at the intersection of waste reduction, livelihoods and circular design. They lead innovative programmes such as Cartagena's only glass recycling centres, where bottles are processed and repurposed for use in construction and landscaping. This initiative reduces landfill waste while providing stable, fairly paid work to local residents.
Supporting women's economic empowerment, Green Apple also partners with women artisans from Bocachica to create glassware and decorative pieces from discarded bottles. Alongside design training, they provide support in budgeting, marketing and business development, offering women greater agency over their income and output. Their impact extends to the hospitality sector as, through waste consultancy services, Green Apple works with local businesses to reduce their waste to landfill, often by more than 50%. Their model is collaborative, practical and place-specific, offering a clear example of what circularity can look like at community level.
