Mirante do Gavião Amazon Lodge
BRAZIL
Opened in 2014, at the borders of the Negro river, overlooking the Anavilhanas National Park – world’s 2nd largest freshwater archipelago. Spread across the rainforest, nest thirteen spacious bungalows made in legal hardwood in the shape of inverted boats, with interior design making use of natural fiber finishings and handicrafts.
Signed by Atelier O'Reilly Sustainable Strategies Architects, the lodge project’s main concern was the balance with the surroundings: the reception area, the accommodations and the restaurant were built of stilts structures, with elevated floors, preserving the soil’s permeability.
Inspired by the work of British botanist Margareth Mee’s many expeditions in the Amazon, landscape designer Clariça Lima took care of the ambience keeping 70 native plants and fruit trees. Meaning “the hawk observatory”, the property has three viewpoints for birdwatching. Facing the river black waters, the infinite-view pool and the Camu Camu restaurant, with its menu by Debora Shornik, chef at the renowned Caxiri Restaurant in Manaus’s city center, presenting all the abundance of the amazonic ingredients and their fish such as the Pirarucu.
Refreshing drinks and “capirinhas” prepared with local fruits such as cupuaçu and açaí are from the wide bar help keep the souls cool bellow the tropical Amazon heat.
