Gangtey Lodge
BHUTAN
Perched above the valley mists of unspoilt Gangtey, Bhutan, Gangtey Lodge embodies the country's philosophy of Gross National Happiness through its harmonious blend of luxury and cultural preservation. Created by Khin Omar Win and Brett Melzer, founders of Balloons over Bagan, this 12-suite Bhutanese 'Farmhouse' was designed by architect Mary Lou Thomson to respectfully integrate with its natural setting. Developed with purpose, the Lodge's sustainability ethos guides their practices; their Green Team plants over 100 trees annually, partners with the Royal Society for Protection of Nature to enhance biodiversity, sources wood from sustainable forests, recycles water, and minimises energy usage. Community empowerment remains central to their mission, with over 95% Bhutanese staff hired locally to stem rural-urban migration. Guest experiences developed in partnership with local communities create sustainable income through donation fees, while authentic cultural immersion opportunities connect visitors with the valley's ancient traditions and the adjacent 17th Century Gangtey Monastery.
